K-State adds Shematsi for 2022-23 season

MANHATTAN, Kansas – K-State Women’s Basketball Head Coach Jeff Mittie completed its 2022-23 roster, as the program added Sarah Shematsi as a transfer forward from LSU.

“Sarah brings athleticism and a good all-around game to our roster,” Mittie said of K-State’s latest addition. “She shoots all three with great range and has been a winner her entire college career. We’re thrilled she’s a Wildcat this season.”

Shematsi played two seasons at LSU — 2020-21 and 2021-22 — and saw action in 35 games with two starts. The 6’2″ forward from Annecy, France, recorded 2.3 points per game and 1.2 rebounds per game. Shematsi showed her touch from long range, hitting a 30.4 percent effort (21 out of 69) to 3 points.

In his third career game at Baton Rouge, Shematsi recorded a career-high 15 points in just 19 minutes of action, including a 5-of-6 performance of three.

Prior to his move to LSU, Shematsi played two seasons at South Plains College in Texas. Shematsi helped the Texans set a 33-1 overall record and the second seed in the 2020 NJCAA National Tournament before it was halted by COVID-19.

Shematsi was a two-time All-WJCAC winner, 2019 WJCAC Freshman, and 2019 NJCAA All-Region V Team. She was also selected to the 2019 NJCAA National Tournament Team and was the 2019 Most Valuable Player at the Juco Top 40 All-Star event. In his sophomore season in 2019-20, Shematsi played in 32 games, averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 40.4 percent from the field. In her freshman season in 2018-19, she averaged 13.6 points and 5.1 rebounds while starting 32 of 35 games.

Prior to arriving at South Plains College, Shematsi won a gold medal for France at the 2016 FIBA ​​3×3 U18 European and World Championships. She also competed for the Toulouse club team MB.

The Wildcats enter the 2022-23 season with two wins under 1,000 in their history. Mittie will enter the 2022-23 season one win under 600 in his coaching career and five wins under 150 during his time in Manhattan.
